#162 Christmas Doll

This is a 14 ¾ inch tall papier-mâché head doll with a cloth body. Dolls of this type were a New England tradition in the 1840’s. The dolls were strictly meant to be a Christmas decoration. Their clothing, which generally included outdoor garments, was not removable.

Each year the doll would be given one tiny "gift" which was affixed to the doll. If the custom was rigorously followed, eventually the doll’s clothing would become almost completely covered with tiny toys.

Many of dolls the used for this purpose were papier-mâché, with girl dolls being the most common, however boy Christmas dolls are found occasionally.

The doll pictured here has a papier-mâché head that I hand cast from a two part plaster mold that I made from an antique doll head in my personal collection. The head is painted with artist oils. It is dressed in hand painted striped socks, flannel breeches or skirt, a fur jacket made from a vintage coat, hand dyed mittens and a tissue paper and fur hat or fur hood and muff. Each doll carries a flag. Stands and additional toys not included. Your choice of boy or girl.

#326 Painted Cloth Rag Doll

This 19-inch tall portrait face doll is made entirely of cloth.  I painted her face with artist oils over gesso.  Her design was inspired by several 19th century styles of painted cloth dolls in my collection.  Her body is made of cotton muslin, which I aged with dyes.  She has sewn-on stripped linen stockings and red leather boots.  Her dress is made from a reproduction cotton print.

This doll and her sister are both featured in my article in the Christmas 2014 issue of Early American Lifemagazine.  I will include a signed copy of the magazine with this doll.  This is my original prototype for the magazine article and is one of a kind.

If you would like to see additional photos of both dolls, please visit my blog:

#327 Cloth Rag Doll

This 19-inch tall doll is made entirely of cloth.  I’ve always found the hand-drawn faces of early cloth dolls to be very endearing and I think that I managed to capture that feeling in the pencil-sketched features of this doll.   Her design was inspired by several 19th century styles of cloth dolls in my collection.  Her body is made of cotton muslin, which I aged with dyes.  Her dress is made from a reproduction cotton print.

This doll and her sister are both featured in my article in the Christmas 2014 issue of Early American Life magazine.  I will include a signed copy of the magazine with this doll.  This is my original prototype for the magazine article and is one of a kind.
